GEORGETOWN AT A GLANCE

Replacing a water heater in Georgetown.

Georgetown requires a permit to replace any water heater. It costs $50 plus a $10 technology fee, and it applies even outside city limits in the ETJ where the city supplies your utilities. Many homes get power from city-owned Georgetown Utility Systems (GUS). Water hardness depends on which treatment plant serves your address, from about 10-11 to about 19 grains per gallon.

Permits outside city limits when Georgetown is your utility

If you live outside city limits but inside Georgetown's ETJ, you still need a Georgetown permit to replace a water heater when the city supplies your water, wastewater and/or electric service.

Georgetown When Do I Need a Permit ↗

What the inspector checks

The final inspection checks for an 18-inch stand in garages (unless the heater is flammable-vapor-resistant or electric), a pan with a 3/4-inch drain where a leak would cause damage, a cold water shutoff, insulation on the first 5 feet of pipe, and a relief valve (T&P) line to an approved spot. For gas heaters it also checks fresh air for burning, a Type B vent and a flex connector no longer than 3 feet.
