QUINCY AT A GLANCE

Replacing a water heater in Quincy.

In Quincy, licensed plumbers and gas fitters file water heater permits with the city's Plumbing and Gas Department, part of Inspectional Services, on the newer ViewPoint system that replaced the old ViewPermit accounts. Quincy has miles of coastline, and many homes are in FEMA flood zones, so where the new heater sits in a basement can matter as much as the permit.

LOCAL CONDITIONS

What’s different in Quincy.

Coastal flood zones (VE and AE)

Quincy's floodplain pages say A and V zones are the most common flood hazard areas in the city: VE where waves reach 3 feet or more, and AE where they're smaller. Newer flood maps (FIRMs) also mark the Limit of Moderate Wave Action. You can see the maps at the Thomas Crane Public Library or the Engineering Department at 55 Sea Street.

City of Quincy: Know Your Flood Hazard ↗

Raise replacements above flood level

Following FEMA, the city's flood guidance says to raise a replacement boiler above the flood level after one is lost to flooding, and the same goes for a basement water heater. Some flood protection work needs a building permit, so the city asks you to talk to the Building Department at 55 Sea Street (617-376-1450) first. The Engineering Department will visit your property if you write to the City Engineer.
