LOCAL CONDITIONS

What’s different in Abington.

One water system for Abington and Rockland

One Joint Water Works serves both towns. It draws from four gravel-packed wells at the Myers Avenue plant in Abington, the Hingham Street (Hannigan) Reservoir in Rockland, and Great Sandy Bottom Pond in Pembroke. Well water is treated with potassium permanganate and Greensand Plus filters to remove iron and manganese, then sodium hydroxide is added to adjust pH and limit pipe corrosion. The utility's office is at 366 Centre Avenue, Rockland (781-878-0901).

PFAS6 treatment is being built

In 2025, the Joint Water Works reported quarterly PFAS6 results above the 20 ng/L state limit at its Hingham Street plant in Rockland. The Myers Avenue plant in Abington tested non-detect after a GAC filter vessel was added. Each town approved borrowing $13 million for GAC and resin treatment at the Hannigan and Myers Avenue plants. The utility's notice lists a whole-house (point-of-entry) PFAS filter as one option, which affects where a new water heater and its piping go.
