SECURITY-WIDEFIELD AT A GLANCE

Replacing a water heater in Security-Widefield.

Security-Widefield is unincorporated El Paso County, so a water heater replacement needs a PPRBD permit: $40, or $75 with the vent. The community sits over the Widefield aquifer, and most tap water still comes from local wells. Since 2021 it's been treated for PFAS from firefighting foam, then mixed with Pueblo Reservoir surface water. The well water is full of minerals: Security's own lab numbers work out to hard water, and Widefield reports sodium averaging about 139 ppm.

Security-Widefield is an unincorporated community in El Paso County, so county offices handle permits.

Who gets the permit
A PPRBD-registered contractor with the right license; for gas piping and gas appliances that means a mechanical contractor license. A homeowner can pull the permit only for work they do themselves on the main home they own and live in, and can't legally pull one for a contractor they've hired.

LOCAL CONDITIONS

What’s different in Security-Widefield.

Two halves, two gas companies

The City of Fountain's utility list names Colorado Springs Utilities as the gas provider for Security and Black Hills Energy for Widefield. Water and sewer are split too, between Security Water and Sanitation District and Widefield Water and Sanitation District. Gas water heater rebates depend on which gas company serves your address.

Security: two-thirds well water, and it's hard

Security Water District's 2025 report says 64.5% of its water came from Widefield aquifer wells and 4.5% from the Windmill Gulch aquifer, with 29.1% Fountain Valley Authority and 1.5% Southern Delivery System surface water, plus water bought from Colorado Springs Utilities in summer. Its latest sample (2023) showed calcium at 85 ppm and magnesium at 15 ppm. That works out to roughly 270 mg/L of hardness (about 16 grains per gallon), hard enough to build up scale in a tank quickly, so budget for a softener or regular flushing.

Widefield: well water high in sodium

Widefield Water and Sanitation District's 2026 report (2025 data) lists more than a dozen of its own wells plus purchased groundwater and two purchased surface-water connections. It reports sodium averaging 139.2 ppm (up to 220) and nitrate averaging 6.14 ppm, under the 10 ppm limit. With this many dissolved minerals, check the anode rod and flush sediment on a regular schedule.

PFAS treatment since 2021

Firefighting foam used at Peterson Space Force Base polluted the Widefield aquifer. Security Water District says its ion exchange plant started in April 2021 to treat these chemicals in groundwater, and its 2025 report shows no PFAS above the 2.0 ppt reporting limit after treatment. Filters at the faucet are a separate choice from the water heater and don't change permit rules.
