WESTCHESTER AT A GLANCE

Replacing a water heater in Westchester.

Westchester doesn't post a water heater rule, so check with the Building Department before you replace one. Plumbing permits need a signed contract and a list of materials, and the village won't release a permit until everyone on the job is registered. Illinois-licensed plumbers register for free. Power is from ComEd, gas from Nicor Gas.

90%Single-family homes

About 87% of homes were built before 1980. Older homes often have older venting, smaller closets and shutoff valves that should be checked before install day.

90% of homes heat with utility gas, so gas water heaters with existing venting are common here.

PERMITS & LICENSING

Permits and licenses in Westchester.

Permits and who issues them

Westchester uses one general Application for Plumbing Permit (Illinois Plumbing Code 2014). You need a signed contract that describes the work in detail and a list of materials. Every contractor on the job must be registered before the permit is released. The forms page has no rule just for water heaters, so check with the Building Department (708-345-0199, building@westchester-il.gov).

Yes. General contractors pay $200 a year and subcontractors $100, with insurance and a bond. Illinois-licensed plumbers register with no fee, no bond and no insurance certificate.

Check the installer’s license

Ask for the license number and search it yourself on the IDPH plumber license verification ↗. A listing on Ember & Tank is not a license check. Illinois licensing explained →
