Lake County towns formed CLCJAWA in 1986 because their groundwater was running low and getting worse. Its Lake Michigan system, treated at the Paul M. Neal plant in Lake Bluff, started in March 1992. The agency puts hardness at about 8 grains per gallon (137 mg/L as CaCO3), steady all year, and says Lake Michigan water has almost no iron.
Decide about the old softener
CLCJAWA's FAQ says you don't need a softener on lake water if you bought it to stop pipe scale or take iron out of well water. It says softeners make water more corrosive and are linked to higher lead and copper levels. It also says to flush a softener after you've been away several days. If your water heater is plumbed behind an old softener loop, a replacement is a good time to keep, bypass or remove it.
