LANSING AT A GLANCE

Replacing a water heater in Lansing.

Lansing hasn't said directly whether a water heater swap needs a permit, so call the Building Department first. It permits plumbing and lets only cosmetic jobs like cabinets and painting skip a permit. The Village is served by ComEd for power and Nicor Gas for gas. Contractors need a Village license, a bond and insurance before any permit is issued. The Village buys its Lake Michigan water from Hammond, Indiana.
